The Client

Hy-Vee is an employee-owned food retailer from the Midwest. Implementing a new dress code meant a big change to the current company culture, where store managers were used to a high level of independent decision-making, especially in terms of apparel. This kind of situation required a vendor who could execute a uniform program that met the employees’ high standard of quality and service.

The Challenge

In 2015, Hy-Vee decided to require a single uniform across all stores so locations would experience the same look and feel in different capacities and Hy-Vee would present a consistent image. We took on the difficult task of implementing the company’s first consolidated uniform program for over 80,000 employees. Aside from creating quality apparel that employees actually enjoyed wearing, we were tasked with forecasting usage for a large-scale rollout—with no prior history. With all eyes on us, we had no choice but to execute this launch flawlessly.

The Solution

First, we worked hand-in-hand with Hy-Vee to design comfortable and durable uniforms in styles that employees were proud to wear. Once final designs were selected, we combined our industry experience with Hy-Vee’s employee data to predict and initiate production for the rollout. We also worked with Hy-Vee on a Communication Plan for its employees, including dress code documentation, webinars, and the creation of Hy-Vee’s first corporate web store. As a team, Hy-Vee and Ukrop’s Threads delivered over 300,000 apparel items to 240 stores across three regions, all within eight weeks with a shipping accuracy rate of 99.3%. Every employee was happily outfitted in a new uniform, right on time.
